How to Make Press-On Nails Last Up to 3 Weeks
- Nail glue: up to 3 weeks
- Sticky tabs: 3–5 days
- Sticky tabs + glue: about 7–10 days
- For the longest wear: the right size, clean oil-free nails, and no water or oil for 30 minutes after application
If your press-ons keep lifting, start with the basics: check the fit, apply to clean and completely dry nails, then follow the steps for your adhesive. At Bloom, we recommend taking your time with sizing and prep before you reach for the glue.
What you’ll need
Every Bloom set includes nail glue, two sheets of sticky tabs, a dual-grit file and buffer, a cuticle stick and alcohol prep pads. Set out your adhesive and tools before you start, and make sure your hands are clean and dry. For extra glue and fast removal, the Bloom glue + remover duo is a good companion, and a cuticle tool kit makes prep quicker.
How to apply press-on nails so they last
1. Check the fit before applying
Lay out the nails in order and test each one before opening your adhesive. A press-on should cover your natural nail from side to side without sitting on your skin. If a nail is slightly too wide, gently file its sides until it fits. A size that is too narrow leaves part of your natural nail uncovered, which lets water in.
Not sure which size to choose? Our press-on nail size guide walks you through measuring.
2. Start with clean, dry nails
Gently push back your cuticles, then lightly buff the surface of each nail. Use a light touch; you’re giving the adhesive something to grip, not thinning the nail. Wipe each nail with an alcohol pad and wait until it is completely dry.
Skip hand cream and cuticle oil before applying. Even a little moisture or oil on the nail plate is the most common reason press-ons pop off early.
3. Apply glue or sticky tabs evenly
For glue, brush a thin, even layer onto your natural nail and the inside of the press-on. For sticky tabs, choose a sticky tab that fits your nail without touching your skin and smooth it down before placing the press-on. More adhesive does not mean a better hold; excess glue creates air bubbles and squeezes out around the edges.
4. Place the nail carefully and hold
Line up the press-on near your cuticle at about a 45-degree angle, then lower it onto the nail. Press from the center toward the sides to push out air bubbles. Hold firmly for 15 seconds with Bloom nail glue.
5. Give the adhesive 30 minutes to set
Whether you use glue, sticky tabs or both, avoid water or oil for 30 minutes after application: no showers, swimming, dishwashing, long soaks, hand cream or cuticle oil.
Glue vs. sticky tabs: which should you use?
The right option depends on how long you want to wear your set and how you prefer to remove it.
| Adhesive | Wear time | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Nail glue | Up to 3 weeks | Everyday wear, vacations, the full three weeks |
| Sticky tabs | 3–5 days | A weekend, event or easy set change |
| Sticky tabs + glue | About 7–10 days | A middle ground between wear time and easy removal |
For frequent design changes or a shorter occasion, sticky tabs are convenient. For the longest wear, use nail glue.
Small habits that help press-ons stay secure
- Use your fingertips, not your nail tips. Opening cans or peeling labels with your nails puts pressure on the edges. Our nail-saving can opener is made for exactly this.
- Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning. Frequent water exposure and long hot soaks soften adhesive faster than anything else.
- Keep cuticle oil away from the adhesive. Once your set has set, a little cuticle oil around the cuticle keeps the surrounding skin soft and your manicure looking fresh. Avoid getting oil under the press-ons.
- Choose a length that fits your routine. If you use your hands a lot, a medium length is easier to live in for a full three weeks than a very long shape.
- Fix lifting right away. Don’t pick at a lifted edge. Gently remove that nail, clean off the old adhesive, and reapply it. Lost or broke one? Email us at hello@bloomnailsco.com with your set name and size, and we’ll help you replace just that nail.
Common reasons press-on nails lift
- Applying over damp nails, lotion or cuticle oil.
- A press-on that is too wide, too narrow or touching the skin.
- Using too much adhesive.
- Getting water or oil on your nails in the first 30 minutes.
- Using nail tips to pry, scrape or open things.
How to remove press-on nails gently
Never pull or pry a press-on off; that’s what damages natural nails. Apply remover oil under the edges and wait 1–2 minutes, or give your fingertips a long, warm, soapy soak (about 10 minutes). Then gently ease each nail off from the side with a cuticle stick. If a nail resists, soak it a little longer.
After removal, buff away any adhesive from your natural nails and the inside of each press-on, then store the nails laid out flat, not piled together. Because every Bloom set is hand-painted, it’s made to be worn again and again.
Press-on nail questions, answered
How long do press-on nails last?
With nail glue, Bloom Nails press-ons last up to 3 weeks. Sticky tabs last 3–5 days, and sticky tabs with glue about 7–10 days.
Why do my press-on nails keep popping off?
The most common reasons are oil or moisture on the natural nail, a poor fit, too much adhesive, or getting water or oil on them in the first 30 minutes. Buffing each nail and wiping it with alcohol before applying fixes most of these.
Can I shower after applying press-ons?
Avoid water or oil for 30 minutes after application, whichever adhesive you use. After that, showers are fine. Avoid long, hot soaks and wear gloves for dishes.
Are glue or sticky tabs better?
Glue is best for longer wear, up to 3 weeks. Sticky tabs last 3–5 days and are ideal for a single event or an easy set change. Sticky tabs with glue are a middle option at about 7–10 days.
Can I reuse press-on nails?
Yes. Remove them gently with remover oil or a long, warm, soapy soak, clean away the old adhesive, and store them laid out flat. Bloom sets are hand-painted to be worn again and again.
